RESUME

According to Global Witness, 2017 was the deadliest year yet for environmental activists, with a reported toll of 207 environmental defenders killed for defending community lands or natural resources. More than half of these murders occurred in just three countries: Brazil (23%), Colombia (18%), and the Philippines (14%), and most were caused by agribusiness, mining, illegal logging, and organized poaching mafias. About 10 percent of the victims were women, the majority indigenous, a number that continues to grow each year.
