Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada have been killed or gone missing at a rate four times the proportion of Aboriginal women in the Canadian population, which is 4.3%. The best available figures were compiled by the non-profit organization Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) through an initiative funded by the government entity Status of Women Canada. As of March 31, 2010, NWAC has collected information on 582 cases of missing or murdered indigenous women and girls across the country over the past 30 years. Civil society organizations have long argued that the number could be much higher, and new research indicates that more than 1,000 indigenous women in Canada may be missing or dead. Despite the fact that high numbers of missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada have been identified both nationally and internationally, there are no reliable statistics that can help to gain a deeper understanding of this problem. The government itself acknowledges that official Canadian statistics do not provide accurate information on the true numbers of missing and murdered indigenous women. In addition, there is no reliable source of disaggregated data on violence against indigenous women and girls, as police in Canada do not consistently report or record whether victims of violent crime are indigenous. 

"It's life-or-death survival for us to fight for our land." For nearly four years, this women-led Indigenous group has been fighting the Trans Mountain Corporation to keep a new pipeline out of their ancestral territory. Using tiny mobile homes, these activists travel across the region, defending their land and their culture while protesting violence against Indigenous women that has been reported along pipeline construction routes. The fight to get their land back it's been a centuries old struggle for Canada's Indigenous communities.
